LEEDS BOOK AWARDS

Have YOU read a really good book lately? Perhaps there was one that made you laugh or cry, made you shiver with excitement, or maybe look over your shoulder in fear? If so, that’s exactly the sort of book we’d like you to tell us about for the new Leeds Book Awards.

What is it?
The Awards are for the two best paperback books published in 2007. There are two categories, 9-11 and 11-14. They will be judged by YOU - the children and young people of Leeds.

So, how does it work?
First of all we need your nominations. Every year in the UK, there are thousands of fantastic children’s books published. Tell us about the one (or ones) you’ve enjoyed the most and if you want to tell us what makes your choice special, that would be great too. Ask your librarian for one of the special Book Awards postcards (postage is free). Or you can nominate your favourite book from this website.

What happens next?
All the nominations will be counted and the six most popular titles in each category will go forward to the final shortlist.

And then?
Now you get to be the judge. Read the books and talk about them with your friends, teachers, carers, and librarians. Go online to see what others think and have your say. Look at the authors’ websites and decide which is your favourite book.

How to vote
Online or in your local library. Voting won’t close until the end of March 2008, so don’t worry there is plenty of time to make up your mind. When all the votes are counted the final results will be announced (April 2008).

The Awards ceremony.
There will be a final Awards ceremony. We haven’t decided when or where it will be yet, but we will let everybody know in plenty of time. So, start reading. And most of all...have fun!!
